Amen...

Generation X is tired.

It’s a parent now, and there’s always so damn much to do. Generation X wishes it had better health insurance and a deeper savings account. It wonders where its 30s went. It wonders if it still has time to catch up.

Fire!

Exciting evening at the Oelkers farmstead - our very own wildfire. Lynn called me around 3ish to let me know that there was an out of control fire in a field across the road from our little place in the country, and today’s gusty winds blew the embers all over the place. Including the soybean fields surrounding our home! A whole squadron of firefighters were on the place when my wife arrived to catch the goings on…

Lynn took it upon herself to rescue our kitties - everything else being mere, well, stuff. A couple hours later everything was under control with little damage for anyone involved. Our total was a couple yards of grass next to our lane not being in need of mowing fir quite sometime, as well as a patch of burnt grass right next to one of our barns. And a traumatized wife who spent over an hour getting our new kitten out of the area behind the glove compartment s/he managed to get stuck behind.

Me, I missed it all, being quite a ways from home when the call came in. I would have at least caught a picture… ;)

Truths About Organic Farming

Some actual long-term research concerning the viability of organic versus conventional farming - not funded by someone with major financial interests in the answers pointing in a particular direction - yields some interesting results.

The real question is, why haven’t I heard more about a study like this?

Particle Accelerator Gets Taken Off Life Support

FermilabWay heavier science than I will ever understand has taken place in places like this, with who knows how many advances made in our communal knowledge. Hopefully the anti-science movement I sense in certain factions of today’s politics some day realizes that theoretical science doesn’t always remain in the theoretical realm.

Oh, and that the word theory means different things in different contexts… ;)
